This is due to the fact that man is quite a fragile creature. Unlike the beast that walked the earth with them during the time of old and medieval ages. The beast that was here on earth had the bodies and weapons that allowed them to be on top of food chain. So, humans were quite susceptible to injury.
This was needed as the bodies of man was quite weak and fragile. This was the precedent that opened the way for medical science to become used and researched by man as the far as that ancient age. There are lots of different civilizations that had this and it can be observed as such.
Going west, the Greeks made their own contribution to this field. It was the Greek who first introduced the idea of having a school that would teach the medical science and practices to students that have the will to learn in what is all about. This has always been adopted by the Romans as well when they haven taken over the Greeks later on.
The modern world has it easy though. Now a day, people could get cure when they are infected with the illness that happened to old places and could not be cured then. The only thing that people have to worry about is getting the money to spend to get medicine and treatment at a hospital.
