For many years yoga enthusiasts and students of the mind body connection have argued that meditating has enormous power to heal physically, mentally, and spiritually. Today scientists are studying the beneficial effects meditation has on Alzheimer sufferers. There are many different ways to meditate, but one that has gained popularity in western culture is color meditation.

Chakra is an essential part of many Indian religions including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. There are seven Chakra in Hinduism. They are each specific energy sources, and each one has a color associated with it. Focusing on a Chakra and its tone while meditating is meant to bring balance to your mind, spirit and body. In the physical, the Chakras run from the top of your head to the base of your spine.

Red is the root Chakra located at the base of your spine. It represents your life force, and when you focus on it you rid your body and mind of anger and frustration. Red stimulates your body and mind and increases circulation. Orange is the sacral Chakra and is located at your naval. It is associated with physical pleasure and creativity. Orange stimulates the nervous system.

Just below your breastbone you find the solar plexus Chakra. Yellow is associated with it, as is vitality and mental alertness. By focusing on yellow you will come out of your meditation with optimism and happiness. The heart Chakra, in the middle of your chest, is green. This is the healing Chakra. You will feel a sense of love and peace when you concentrate on green.

The throat Chakra is found where you would expect it and is associated with blue. This is the area that gives you confidence and encourages self-expression. The third eye Chakra, represented by indigo, is at the center of your forehead. Concentrating on indigo promotes peace of mind. At the top of your skull rests the violet crown Chakra. This is the place of universal consciousness.

When you first start this form of meditating, you probably should concentrate on one specific area. Experts suggest before you begin that you think about the things that of most concern to you. If you are having trouble in a relationship for example, you need to focus on red. People who have a specific physical issues need to meditate on the tone that represents that part of the body.

Once you have mastered the basics, you can go on to something more complicated. Find the most comfortable position for yourself first. Visualize gold light above you. Pull it down into yourself and feel the relaxation as the light fills your being. Begin by focusing on the red root Chakra and work your way up to the violet crown.

Meditating is more work than most people, who have never tried it, think it is. Meditation requires concentration and discipline. It is an ancient belief that has stood the test of time.
